  5.     It bore a disconcerting resemblance to an asphalt driveway
  6. on the move and gone berserk. As an immense flow of 2000
  7. degrees F lava from Kilauea volcano oozed across Hawaii's Big
  8. Island, one dwelling after another smoldered, then burst into
  9. flames. Roads were buried, palm trees and utility poles snapped
  10. and fell. At least 53 homes in the sleepy village of Kalapana
  11. have been destroyed since April, and all 300 residents had been
  12. evacuated by the weekend.

  14.     Some volunteers remained behind to move the historic Star
  15. of the Sea Roman Catholic church -- a structure noted for its
  16. interior wall paintings -- out of the path of destruction. By
  17. the time the lava flow sputters off into the ocean, Kalapana
  18. will be no more. Says Harry Kim, Hawaii County's civil-defense
  19. chief: "This community is finished. This land won't be
  20. productive for 150 years."
